Being a doer // James 1:22-25

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” (James 1:22-25 NLT)

I just got back from having lunch with a very dear friend of mine. I freaking LOVE him so very much and he has been with me through so many changes in my life. He is by far one of the most consistent, loving, and loyal people I have ever met.

During our conversation, we started to talk about different prayer requests we have and where we want to improve in our lives. He talked about praying for his wife more, leading his home better, etc… He already does an absolutely amazing job of that from what I have seen in the fruit of his life, but he just wants to be even better.

As we were discussing I simply asked him, “What about you doing about that?” At first, he seemed kind of perplexed by the question and maybe even caught off guard. I asked him that question because he has brought that prayer request up a few times over the last few months…

You see… Often times we pray so often that we forget to do. Don’t get me wrong, I am a very firm believer in the power of prayer and what God does through prayer, BUT have you ever wondered if we have ever missed out on something because we prayed, but never did.

Do you think there was ever a door that you were praying to open, that was already opened and you just needed to walk through it? You see I am a firm believer that when Jesus says, “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8 NLT) He means for us to continue to be active…

For example. I know I am called to the ministry for youth. I know that I know that I know. It has been confirmed many times and I consistently meditate on this verse 2 Timothy 2:21-22 that says, “If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” Although I know what God has promised and that in His perfect timing it will come to pass, I have not stood idly by. I have been enrolled at a seminary school, have taken leadership courses, have been reading leadership materials, I serve in youth ministry, etc… I have been ACTIVE in my prayers. I have been ACTIVE in the promises. YES pray, YES seek, YES Knock, Yes ask, but keep moving and spreading the gospel.

We cannot allow our callings, gifts, passions, desires, etc… overshadow the call to be a disciple of Christ. Because of the core of it all, we must be doers of the word and not just hearer’s… What are you doing at this moment to become more like Christ? What are you doing to position yourself where God needs you to be positioned? What are you doing to prepare yourself for the calling God has on your life? Maybe your prayer hasn’t been answered because you aren’t ready?

Love wins fam… Grace wins…
