#VOD: 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

There are certain parts of scripture that are always much easier to apply in our lives and then there are scriptures like this… On the surface, it may not seem like much but this is a powerful piece of scripture that has major application to our daily lives…

There are a few powerful things we are being told here when it comes to the power behind God’s word and what it means to our lives…

1- God’s word isn’t just to encourage us, but also to teach, rebuke, correct and train us in righteousness.

Yes, the scriptures do encourage us and present us with everlasting life through Jesus, but they also challenge us to live better. The Gospel is presented to us in a way that does offer the promise of the life to come but also calls us to live differently in the life we live now.

A) To teach: The word is meant to teach us things that the world cannot teach us. The things we are taught are counter to what the world teaches us. What the word of God teaches us is to live selflessly for others and deny ourselves.

B) To rebuke: No one likes to be rebuked when it first starts to happen, but rebuking comes from love. If God didn’t care He wouldn’t rebuke. Plain & Simple. Rebuking isn’t punishment, it is just a way for us to know what we should NOT be doing…

C) To correct: After being rebuked, we are then given the way to correct those wrong actions. We aren’t left to figure things out on our own, but actually shown a much better way to live.

D) To train: All of these work together. We are taught, rebuked, corrected and trained all for the glory of God. Being trained is hands on. Through temptations, through trials, through pure struggles in our lives, we are trained in righteousness that is FAR more rewarding.

2- Through God’s word we are taught, rebuked, corrected and trained for something much greater than ourselves.

Many things in life require us to be prepared for something greater. Whether that be sports, school, work, or whatever else… Over time we are taught, rebuked, corrected and trained for something much greater… God wants us to be equipped to do every good work that He needs us to do…

Think of it like this… For anyone who has ever played sports, when your coach is on your butt it may be frustrating, annoying, and/or downright irritating, BUT it’s because they care. It’s because they see the potential in you… Same goes for our Father. He cares, He sees your potential, and He will do nothing less than doing everything He can to see that potential fulfilled…
