#VOD: John 13:34

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Jesus is saying a lot in this verse! There are multiple ways that this verse can be applied to our daily lives, but today I feel it’s best we focus on HOW we should be loving one another…

1- “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

This is a tough standard to meet… We are to love others as Jesus loved us?!

  • But what about the one who hurt me… Yup.
  •        The liar?! Yup.
  •        The adultery!? Yup.
  •        The drunk? Yup…
  •        The prositute? Still yup…
  •        The “dead beat” parents? Also yup…
  •        The thiefs? You guessed it…. Yup.
  •        Murderers?! Double yup…
  •        Con-artist?! Yup yup yup!

This is what makes this verse so challenging when we think about it and TRULY apply it to our lives. We have to love everyone as Jesus loves us. In all of our filth, all of our sins, all of our past mistakes, all of our current flaws, all of it, all of it, and all the in between.

How else does this apply? It’s simple really, we aren’t simply offering them “love” masked in religion, but fighting to have LEGITIMATE love for them.I’ll be the first to admit, there are some people in my life that I have to FIGHT for that love in my heart… It would be much easier to just sit back and allow the hurt to overpower and use it to excuse my actions…

2- Allow the realization of how “hard” it can be to love someone “unlovable” to deepen your relationship with God

What I mean by this is simple, the love that God has for us all in imeasurable… We are all so very unworthy of the love He offers us on a daily basis. We all know how hard it can be to love someone who has hurt us… But that’s the beauty and power in being able to be more like Christ and offer the love that we may think they don’t deserve…

They may not “deserve” it in our minds, but we DO NOT deserve the love that God gives us, but He gives it anyone & challenges us to do the same…
