For Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. [1]

Isaiah 65:17 – ESV

“Christ has taken our nature into heaven, to represent us; and has left us on earth, with His nature, to represent Him.” [1]

This verse has always been a favorite of mine because we see it in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. God is a redeemer by nature and loves to bring things to life. I got engaged recently and it was such a glorious reminder of God’s faithfulness to redeem and restore something to being better than it was before. God isn’t in the business of just restoring us back to a semi-decent point, or something that can be humanly possible… No, no, no. God restores us & redeems us to something far greater that goes beyond human understanding… and as of 12-29-18, He has done it again in my life.

With today’s verse, God is speaking through the prophet Isaiah to tell His people that He will create NEW heavens and a NEW earth. So glorious that the “former things will not be remembered or come to mind.” This is a GLORIOUS promise and so amazing to think that what we have in our future is something so great that we won’t even remember the past life we had. We will be so completely blown away and amazed at what God is doing and what God has done.

One very important aspect of these verses, (17-25) is how our daily lives will affect the experience in our days to come. On a theological level this verse is important in reminding up that our actions will bear fruit from this day, for tomorrow and into our eternity. This should encourage us to live our lives being obedient as we possibly can. Paul told Titus,

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope- the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” [2]

It’s by God’s wonderful grace for us all that we have a better future world to look forward to. This should encourage us all to live devoted lives now to assure that the reality we are shaping is a joyful one. I heard an old adage that said, “some people are so heavenly minded, they are no earthly good,” but it is also true that there are a lot of believers, and people, that have forgotten that the story we are telling today, only has its end on the other side of the grave.
